President of the French Senate Gérard Larcher expressed pride in his delegation’s historic visit to Morocco’s southern regions, marking a key moment in strengthening bilateral ties.
Speaking after meetings with local officials, Larcher emphasized that the visit provided an opportunity to reinforce France’s support for Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Sahara and its recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its entire territory.
During his visit, Larcher met with Abdesslam Bekrat, Wali of the Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra region, Sidi Hamdi Ould Errachid, President of the Laâyoune Regional Council, and Moulay Hamdi Ould Errachid, President of Laâyoune Municipality.
He thanked local authorities for their warm reception and underscored the significance of the discussions in building trust and cooperation between France and Morocco, especially in the southern provinces.
Larcher reiterated France’s firm position on the Sahara issue, stating that Paris sees Morocco’s autonomy proposal as the only serious and feasible solution to the ongoing conflict.
He made clear that this stance reflects official French policy, following detailed discussions within French legislative and executive circles.
The French Senate President also praised the region’s development, noting that Laâyoune has become a model for sustainable growth. He highlighted the major infrastructure and sectoral improvements driven by King Mohammed VI’s initiatives, particularly in education, health, and transportation.
Larcher stressed that the relationship between France and Morocco has entered a new phase, characterized by clarity and mutual commitment. He concluded that the long-standing friendship between the two countries is now stronger than ever, transcending political and governmental boundaries to reflect a deep-rooted bond between their peoples.
