Amazigh activists in Morocco said they were outraged by the desecration of the Amazigh flag by a group of individuals suspected of having ties to the Ministry of Interior in the Libyan Government of National Unity.

The perpetrators forced passersby to step on the flag in a public street in Tripoli, an act they viewed as a direct attack on an important Amazigh symbol. The activists rejected such provocations aimed at undermining the cultural and linguistic diversity of North Africa.

In a statement, the Amazigh activists said “the Amazigh flag is not just a piece of fabric, but a symbol of Amazigh identity, history, and heritage, and it is an integral part of the Libyan national fabric.”

“Insulting this flag is an insult to every Amazigh person and every Libyan who believes in the values of respect, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence,” he statement said, calling for an immediate investigation into the incident and for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.

In response, the Libyan Government of National Unity, led by Abdulhamid Dbeibeh, issued a statement condemning the attack on the Amazigh flag. The government emphasized that the Prime Minister had instructed legal action to be taken against those responsible and reaffirmed “respect for the Amazigh identity as an integral part of Libyan culture, rejecting any attempts to incite division among the people.”

Abubakr Anghir an Amazigh human rights activist and head of the Amazigh League for Human Rights told Hespress AR TAHT “the desecration of the Amazigh flag in Libya indicates that the Amazigh people are targeted by remnants of the former regime and those who reject cultural and linguistic pluralism.”

He further noted that “this incident reflects efforts to undermine social peace in Libya and the wider Maghreb region, aiming to prevent the achievement of legitimate Amazigh demands.”

“Hostility toward the Amazigh has become widespread in Libya and North Africa, and governments must enact laws and policies that foster reconciliation with this essential component of North African identity.”

He warned that “any future political project in Libya or North Africa that excludes the Amazigh or ignores their cultural and civilizational significance will be doomed to failure.”
