In a move reflecting Morocco and France’s commitment to strengthening parliamentary cooperation, Gerard Larcher, President of the French Senate, will arrive in Laayoune on Monday evening, leading a high-level delegation on a visit with both diplomatic and developmental significance.

The visit follows France’s historic decision last July to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara. It also aligns with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot’s recent announcement supporting developmental and diplomatic initiatives in the southern regions of Morocco, signaling Paris’ intent to bolster its diplomatic and consular presence in the area.

According to sources from Hespress AR, the French delegation, on an official visit to Morocco, will hold a series of meetings with local officials, elected representatives, and tribal leaders of the Sahara.

The first day’s agenda includes a dinner reception where Larcher will meet with representatives and tribal leaders of the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra region. During the event, speeches will be delivered by local representatives, Sahrawi tribal leaders, and both the French Senate President and his Moroccan counterpart, Sidi Mohamed Ould Errachid.

On Tuesday, Larcher is scheduled for one-on-one talks with Abdeslam Bekrate, Wali (Governor) of the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra region, followed by meetings with Moulay Hamdi Ould Errachid, Mayor of Laayoune, and Sidi Hamdi Ould Errachid, President of the Regional Council.

The delegation will also tour major social and economic projects in the city, underlining France’s interest in local development efforts.

As part of the visit, Larcher will lay the foundation stone for the French School in Laayoune and visit the French Cultural Association headquarters. This reflects a growing commitment to enhancing educational and cultural cooperation between the two nations.

Larcher’s delegation includes several senior officials, reflecting the high-level nature of this visit. Among them is Cédric Perrin, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defense, and Armed Forces, who plays a key role in shaping France’s international and security policies.

Christian Cambon, Chairman of the France-Morocco Friendship Group, is also part of the delegation, emphasizing the strong parliamentary ties between the two nations.

Hervé Marseille, Chairman of the Centrist Union Group and Vice-Chairman of the France-Morocco Friendship Group, joins the visit, reinforcing the diplomatic and cooperative efforts between the two countries. Corinne Féret, Vice-President of the Parliamentary Delegation for Local and Regional Authorities, is also present, highlighting the importance of decentralized governance and regional partnerships in Franco-Moroccan relations.

Additionally, Hubert du Canson, Diplomatic Advisor to the Senate President, and Patrick Dray, Special Advisor, are accompanying the delegation, bringing their expertise in international diplomacy and strategic affairs.

Gilles Perroche, Head of Security for the Senate President, ensures the logistical and security aspects of the visit, while Christophe Lecourtier, the French Ambassador to Morocco, further strengthens the diplomatic presence and coordination between the two nations.

This visit underscores the deepening bilateral ties between Morocco and France, particularly in the context of France’s evolving stance on the Sahara issue and its commitment to supporting development in Morocco’s southern regions.
