A 25-year-old Moroccan student in Romania was assaulted by a group of individuals from the municipality of Slivilești, located in the Gorj County. His girlfriend, who was accompanying him, was sexually assaulted, according to Romanian media reports.

The incident occurred on February 16, when the Moroccan student and his girlfriend, of Turkish descent, decided to travel to the city of Târgu Jiu by hitchhiking.

The victims got into a car with four people they did not know, only to have a sudden argument with the driver. The Moroccan student was forcibly removed from the car and beaten, while his girlfriend was detained and raped.

The same sources reported that the Moroccan student contacted the Romanian police, who arrested the four perpetrators. The public prosecutor issued a decision to place two individuals, aged 24 and 32, under provisional detention, while the other two were placed under judicial supervision, pending further investigations and the issuance of a court ruling.

Sorin Bucărescu, the mayor of Slivilești, expressed his outrage over the incident, saying: “I do not understand why these individuals committed this criminal act, nor do I understand why they covered their faces when they were detained, even though they showed no shame while committing these acts.”
