Morocco-Britain energy project: "XLinks" negotiates with UK government for acceleration

X Links, the company responsible for the world’s longest undersea power cable between Morocco and the UK, is seeking political support from the British government to expedite the project, according to Bloomberg.

The company is in talks to secure a fixed-price energy contract, although the project’s timeline has been impacted by the recent UK elections and government changes.

Despite being labeled a national priority by the UK government, the project faces skepticism from investors and government entities about its feasibility. “X Links” is negotiating for a higher price for energy compared to offshore wind farms, but lower than the 2016 Hinkley Point C nuclear deal.

The project aims to provide 8% of the UK’s electricity needs and reduce wholesale energy prices, while also helping to address renewable energy intermittency. It will connect with Morocco via 4,000 kilometers of subsea cable, expected to be operational by 2031.
