Tebboune admits he asked Macron not to recognize Moroccan sovereignty over Sahara

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune confirmed that he had asked French President Emmanuel Macron not to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara during their meeting on the sidelines of the June G7 summit in Italy, just months before Macron’s historic visit to Morocco.

In an interview with L’Opinion, Tebboune said, “I warned President Macron that recognizing Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara would be a grave mistake.”

This refers to France’s recognition of Morocco’s claim, which was made evident when Macron, in a speech before the Moroccan Parliament, endorsed Morocco’s proposal for autonomy in the disputed region.

Tebboune denied that Algeria is supplying weapons to the Polisario. “The Sahrawis are requesting arms, but we have refrained from providing them for now,” he said.

He also emphasized that the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (RASD) is a member of the African Union and praised international recognition of Sahrawi rights, citing recent rulings by the European Court of Justice (CJUE) in October 2024.

Relations with Morocco, severed since August 2021, were described by Tebboune as a “chess game,” where Algeria is forced to respond to what it considers hostile actions. He reaffirmed Algeria’s support for the Polisario Front, describing their cause as a “colonial issue” that must be resolved, just as Algeria gained independence after 132 years of occupation.

Tebboune also expressed his firm stance on relations with Israel, stating that Algeria would not normalize ties with Israel until a Palestinian state is established. He told L’Opinion, “Of course, on the day that happens,” referencing Algeria’s unwavering commitment to the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Regarding Algeria’s relationship with France, Tebboune denied any intention to sever ties, noting that much effort has been made to prevent a full break in relations.

However, he described the current climate between Algeria and France as “poisoned,” indicating ongoing challenges despite attempts at diplomacy.

Tebboune also voiced his support for Tunisian President Kais Saied, whom he called a “brother” with significant popular backing in Tunisia, despite criticism.

He underscored Algeria’s economic support for Tunisia, recalling the country’s sacrifices during Algeria’s fight for independence. “Today, it is our duty to stand by the brotherly Tunisian people,” he concluded.
