Spanish police have dismantled a criminal network involved in smuggling hashish from Morocco, arresting 13 individuals during a months-long operation.
The investigation began in May 2024, when authorities intercepted a 15-meter-long boat attempting to unload four tons of hashish at La Ametlla de Mar beach in Tarragona. The boat, carrying 100 packages of hashish, weapons, and ammunition, was seized after a chase in which some items were discarded.
Subsequent investigations led to the arrests of six additional individuals in Alicante, including the group’s alleged leader. Most of the detainees had prior criminal records, police said. Efforts to identify and apprehend other collaborators are ongoing, with cooperation between national police units.
The case originated on May 26, 2024, when police discovered a sailing boat with three outboard motors, a small truck, scattered packages of drugs on the shore, and several individuals fleeing the scene. Seven people were arrested during the initial phase of the operation.
Aboard the vessel, authorities found a nine-millimeter bullet and a firearm loaded with ammunition of the same caliber. A joint task force, including the National Police’s Drug and Organized Crime Unit in Alicante, was established to investigate.
After months of surveillance, six additional suspects were identified in Alicante and subsequently arrested in a coordinated operation.
During a raid on the leader’s residence in Muro de Alcoy, police confiscated small amounts of hashish.
The arrested individuals face charges of drug trafficking and membership in a criminal organization.
