A recent survey by the Mediterranean Meetings for Cinema and Human Rights revealed that gender-based violence is a pervasive issue for women in Morocco’s film industry.
The study found that 80% of participants had either witnessed or experienced at least one form of gender-based violence in their careers. Psychological violence was reported as the most common, with victims often unable to prove its occurrence
. Economic violence, such as exploitative contracts and lack of transparency, was also prevalent, particularly among women in technical and production roles.
Sexual harassment, including exploitation and unwanted advances, was identified as a major concern, especially for younger actresses.
The report highlighted a lack of professional frameworks and insufficient awareness of rights among women, particularly early in their careers. The study calls for legal reforms, better workplace protections, and educational campaigns to address gender discrimination and violence in the sector.
