At least seven people were fined in Russia for “looking too gay” after a police raid on a nightclub in February. According to reports, police in military-style uniforms raided the club and detained at least eight people.
The police said the people were “trying to arouse interest in non-traditional sexual relations,” which is against Russian law. They described the clothes of those fined as promoting a “non-traditional sexual lifestyle.” One man was described as wearing pink socks, a kimono, orange hair, and red tattoos. Judges agreed that this kind of clothing didn’t fit the “image of a man of traditional sexual orientation.”
One bartender with turquoise hair and piercings avoided a fine by saying he was part of the goth subculture. The fines were up to 50,000 roubles ($450).
In related news, Russia has passed a law banning people from countries that allow “gender transition” from adopting Russian children.
